Carmen JaJuan Hughey from Gainesville, Ga., Participates in 10th Brenau University Mediation Tournament

Carmen JaJuan Hughey from Gainesville, Ga., participated in the 10th annual Brenau University invitational intercollegiate mock mediation tournament on the Gainesville campus Oct. 5-6.

Hughey is a senior at Brenau majoring in conflict resolution and legal studies. Hughey was a member of the three-person Brenau team that placed second in overall team scoring for the competititon and a member of the two-person team that placed second in the client/advocate team scoring. She also ranked fifth among top individual competitors.

She is the daughter of John and Brenda Hughey of Gainesville, Ga . Hughey is a graduate of West Hall High School in Gainesville, Ga. She is a member of the Mock Mediation team, the Mock Trial Team, and BAMALS (Brenau Association of Mediators and Legal Scholars).

Brenau students scored the most combined points in team competitions.

The tournament, a regional program that has been regarded as a limbering up for teams that participate in national competition each November, featured representatives from colleges and universities in three states: two teams each from Brenau, Gainesville State, Georgia State University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Western Carolina University, Clayton State University, and Brenau University.

Kennesaw State University Professor Susan Raines, a well-known author on mediation and the editor-in-chief of the Conflict Resolution Quarterly, conducted the training for the students and mediators. The 16 teams then paired off in the three-round mediation performances. The judges for this tournament were mediators, legal professionals and others trained in mediation who volunteered their time to evaluate the performances of the student participants as they mediated and advocated for their clients in the various role plays.
