Work by Carly Reid of Commerce, Ga., is Featured in Brenau University Spring Dance Program

Carly Reid, a senior dance education major from Commerce, Ga., is the featured student choreographer in "Change is the Only Constant," the 2013 spring dance program at Brenau University.

The program, scheduled for Thursday, April 11, through Saturday, April 13, nightly at 7:30 p.m. at the John S. Burd Center for the Performing Arts at 429 Academy St. on Brenau's Gainesville campus. Prices are $6 general admission and $4 for children, seniors and non-Brenau students.

The 10 unique works in the program include two pieces by Reid. Her contemporary senior thesis choreography, "Her Majesties," portrays the complexities of the six wives of King Henry VIII.

"I hope to convey each queen's time on the throne in a way which allows the audience to feel immersed in their stories," Reid said.

She also will present a solo work portraying an abstract awakening of a scarecrow and her ensuing curiosity.

The spring dance concert also features a performance by guest artist Charlotte Boye-Christensen and by Brenau students, alumni and faculty.

Christensen, artistic director of the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company of Salt Lake City, recently received critical acclaim for her performance of the modern piece, "Stirrings," at the juried southeastern regional American College Dance Festival at the University of South Florida.

Reyna O'Leary, a Brenau alumna who is now dance director at North Gwinnett High School, will perform "Shouting Whispers," an artistic view into the mysteries of autism. Her program is part of her work toward a Master of Fine Arts degree at Jacksonville University.

Brenau dance faculty choreographers include Cassandra Alvarado, Vincas Greene and Lisa Koepfer-Lock. Each will present new works ranging from modern to musical theater.
